In the Tally series of paintings I used a simple repeated mark to represent the passing of time. Each mark can be seen to symbolise a moment or event, repeating and building across the surface of the canvas, until it is complete covered.

By repeating a single mark the surface of the painting builds, creating intricate colour relationships, movement, depth and rythmn. I imagine the marks continuing into and beyond the picture plain.
