This painting is part of my Tally Series where I focussed on using the simple gesture of a repeated line to cover the surface of the canvas, building textural layers of paint. By imposing a strict limit to the mark making I was forced to explore how this would affect the overall composition of the piece.
In this version, there is an echo of a composition as the edge-to-edge repetition of the marks create an almost woven, textile quality. You can see a hint of a horizon line, or the suggestion of an edge. Yellow is the dominant colour here, but is counterbalanced by cooler pale blues and greens. The impermanent quality of the surface suggests a cadence, where each mark contributes to a rhythm that guides the eye across the canvas
